About the event
A concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of Farnham-based arts charity, Creative Response, featuring award-winning Scottish fiddler Ryan Young, accompanied by guitarist David Foley, plus support from singer-songwriter DiElle.
Described by The Scotsman as “a force of nature”, Ryan Young has twice been a finalist in the prestigious BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition and has been nominated for multiple awards, winning ‘Up And Coming Artist Of The Year’ at the Scots Trad Awards in 2017. His expressive and scintillating fiddle playing has drawn enthusiastic responses from audiences across the UK, Europe and America. He will be accompanied by David Foley on guitar, who also holds a clutch of awards for Scottish traditional music, most notably with the band RURA.
What to expect: Ryan is a rising star on the Scottish trad music scene. He plays the fiddle with mesmerising intensity, expressiveness and virtuosity, taking traditional Scottish music to exciting new heights. Ryan is joined on his UK-wide tour by long-time friend and collaborator, David Foley, who provides the driving rhythmic accompaniment on guitar. In the support slot, DiElle is a songstress with a knack for brutally honest lyrics, and a voice that could bring a tear to the eye of the most stone hearted souls.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to Creative Response, an independent arts charity providing and promoting access to creative practice and the arts for the wellbeing of vulnerable people in our community. Registered Charity No. 1096890
RYAN YOUNG
2022 MG ALBA Musician of The Year nominee Ryan Young brings new and exciting ideas to traditional Scottish music, receiving international praise for his spell-binding interpretations on the fiddle. His debut album was recorded with four time GRAMMY winner Jesse Lewis (who has worked with the likes of Bela Fleck and Yo Yo Ma) and launched at Feakle Traditional Music Festival in County Clare, accompanied by renowned guitarist, Dennis Cahill (Martin Hayes; The Gloaming).
Focussing on traditional Scottish music, Ryan brings new life to very old, often forgotten tunes by playing them in his own unique way. His fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. His sound is very distinctive and takes the listener on an emotional and adventurous journey in any performance.
Ryan holds both a first class honours and a Masters degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was twice a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards and twice a finalist in the prestigious BBC Radio Scotland. Ryan was the only UK artist selected to perform at the prestigious World Music conference, WOMEX, in 2019.
